Indians Do a Double Dance in Rohde Relays

Rohde Relays Track Meet At Weyauwega-Fremont May 5, 2008

In the Annual Len Rohde Relays, Wega Fremont High School pulled off something this past Monday that had never happened before. Both the Indians & Lady Indians won the WFHS Invitational meant to honor the storied history of Coach Len Rohde.

Coach Rohde was the coach of the very first conference track championship team in 1954, and this year both the boys and girls from Wega honored his memory like it was nobodies business.

It was a complete team effort as the mature experienced Indians Boys team scored in every event except the triple jump. The boys team solidified its place as the confer4ence favorites in Saturday’s Conference Championships that Wega will be hosting.

Sean Baldwin and Nate Volz were named the outstanding athletes of the meet, but every boy who competed pitched in with their efforts to make the 2008 Rohde relays just the second time ever that the boys have won the meet.

For the girls it was the “Baby” Lady Indians going to war with the experienced conference favorites from Wittenberg-Birnamwood, and for the first time all season the Lady Indians outscored the Chargerettes.

It is the fourth time in six years that the Wega girls have won the meet. And it was also an inspired team effort that made all the difference in the final scores. The Lady Indians scored in every event except the shot put, and piled up tons of points with seconds, thirds, and fourth place finishes the other schools in the meet just could not stay with in the end.

Freshman Dacia Goetsch and junior Beth Winske were named the outstanding Lady Indians of the meet. Dacia even went out and set a new freshman record in the 300 hurdles breaking Vaugn Schneider’s record with a time of 50.8 seconds for the race.

This Saturday, the festivities get under way at 9:30, and the track parents are asked to please remember to help out a little bit in the running of our world famous concessions stand. The concession crew can use as much help as you are able to give, and will also need the help of those athletes from Wega that are not competing.

The big meet of the year is right on the horizon as the Indians have been pointing towards Saturdays contest all year long. The boys won in 2000, the girls in 2002, the guys in 2004 and 2006. Maybe both can win in 2008. Be there and support your Indians.
